Anyone who’s ever dreamed of running off to join the circus will be right at home in The Flying Trapeezees. A slickly-produced, tongue-in-cheek foray into the world of late 19th century aerial acrobatics, the title proves a relatively engaging way to turn off your brain and unwind.While fairly simple and repetitive, not to mention unlikely to challenge veteran keyboard jocks, hey.… we can confidently say it’s the most fun you’ll have in tights, outside of the odd dance recital.According to the tale – cleverly told via cartoonish reproductions of vintage silent film clips complete with grainy camera filters – Monsieur Francois and Madame Amélie Trapeezee are two unemployed, down-on-their-luck aerialists. France itself has also fallen into the doldrums, as a wave of depression sweeps the land of wine and cheese.

While reminiscing over the good old days though, the pair discovers a hidden cache containing a handbook of tricks and enchanted map tucked away behind the portrait of trapeze inventor Jules L éotard. Armed with this info, they quickly set off to cheer up the entire nation by performing a series of stunt-laden shows at exotic venues ranging from Nice to Reims, Strasbourg and Mont Saint-Michel.
To the ever-present tune of a superb, period-specific soundtrack, you’ll help the clan with each of these performances. Playable characters, selectable before each stage, include Francois, Amelie, daughter Celeste, grandpa and even a pet monkey. Once chosen, your hero/heroine is shot into the air via cannon, where they can loop, swirl and dive (sorry, no realistic physics modeling here) with a simple wave of the mouse. Slowly descending through the atmosphere – markers and flags chart one’s progress from, say, 300 meters down to 200, 100 and an eventual flamboyant landing – players must aim to collect floating, flying or balloon-mounted gems.

Sex appeal is a common ingredient in videogames, but X-Blades may represent a new level in blatant eyeball-grabbing. The anime-tastic heroine, Ayumi, wears a shockingly small amount of clothing, even by gaming standards.

Luckily, while she may have forgotten to bring a pair of pants on her evil demon-fighting, treasure-hunting hack 'n slash adventure, she did remember two rather badass swords... that just happen to also serve as a pair of badass guns.
The first thing anyone will notice about X-Blades, though, is Ayumi and her scantily clad backside. We're not dirty old men (or women), but when the camera is purposely situated directly below her tiny thong, it's clear the developers want you to notice. The focus is undeniable.

There is a game behind the behind, however, one that mixes nonstop combat, platforming and large doses of flashy, screen-filling magic. We spent most of our hands-on time cutting down a variety of demonic creatures, from some sort of evil miniature dinosaurs to a hulking werewolf boss. Ayumi moves strikingly fast through the ruin settings (even a little floaty, though the game is only 60% done at this point). She mainly attacks with her gun blades, which can slash the crap out of brutes, but also shoot them from afar should you want to hold your distance. Overall, the fighting felt a tad basic, but still managed to provide us with a satisfying rush.

During the course of the adventure, which follows Ayumi on her quest to retrieve her stolen soul, you'll also discover magical powers that can raze hordes of enemies in a single blast. We used an earthquake spell to great effect on the werewolf and a fireball on an ice monster that couldn't be defeated any other way. The spells don't come for free, but are instead purchased by using soul points earned from the monsters you slaughtered. They also can't be used at all times, only when your Rage meter is filled. How do you fill the Rage meter? Apparently, by killing fools - we suppose the red bar represents anger. Finally, as the game progresses, you can choose between dark and light incantations, which will affect which ending of the game you see.

X-Blades promises upgrades to your swords and spells, but the souls you collect can also buy you health or more Rage should you be down and out. We also witnessed evidence of some cool combos, helpful side characters and diverse locales. Alas, the one thing you won't see in the final product is an alternate costume for Ayumi, so you may be stuck staring at her rather bare posterior for the entire experience. Oh well...

You wouldn't automatically expect a multiplayer first-person shooter like Counter-Strike to serve as the main inspiration for a game based on a 1989 pen-and-paper RPG, but that's exactly what you get in Microsoft's Shadowrun,

which takes all of the cyberpunk-plus-magic stuff from the RPG and boils it down to magic spells and technological character upgrades. The action is kind of neat, but a lack of variety and its multiplayer-only offering make for a pretty shallow experience that feels about $30 too expensive.

Aside from six brief-but-necessary training sequences and the ability to play against bots of questionable intelligence, Shadowrun is played online. Up to 16 players can get into one eight-on-eight game, pitting the rebellious Lineage forces against the new-world-order-like RNA Global, who are apparently fighting each other in an attempt to control magic, which has recently returned to an already-high-tech world. But that's about as much story as you're going to get here, as the rest of the game is all about buying skills and controlling artifacts.

Shadowrun is a round-based multiplayer first-person shooter that works a lot like Counter-Strike. At the front of each round, you're given a safe period where you can access a buy menu and purchase weapons, tech upgrades, and magic spells. So in addition to buying a submachine gun, you might pick up some aim enhancement in the form of the SmartLink tech upgrade, and the ability to teleport through walls, floors, and ceilings. These skills set the game a bit apart from the average team-based shooter as it lets you specialize. Spells like tree of life and resurrect let you heal and revive other players. Or you might get smoke, which lets you transform into a smoke form that can't be damaged by conventional weapons. Or perhaps you'll buy gust, which blows players around and, not so coincidentally, makes for a powerful counter against players using smoke. There's a pretty good collection of abilities to play around with, but the catch is that you can have only three of them equipped at any given time.
